A group of poachers recently entered a settlement of the isolated Jarawa tribe on the Andaman islands and stole honey collected by the group. When the Jarawa retaliated by raiding an illegal settlement nearby, officials reacted by moving the whole Jarawa band – yet left the illegal settlement in place.
Despite official commitments, the administration of the Andaman Islands is doing little to combat poaching on Jarawa land. In an internal report on the incident, it notes, 'It is usual that poachers enter into Jarawa reserve areas to hunt wild animals.'
