Krenak Indians block railway in demand for land

Two hundred Krenak Indians blocked the Vitória-Minas railway in Minas Gerais, Brazil, on 1 December, demanding the full recognition of their territory. Part of the Krenak's land was returned to them in 1997 after many years in the hands of colonists and big landowners, but an important area, known as Sete Salões, has still not been recognised.
The Krenak are also demanding compensation for damage to their land by the hydroelectric power dam Aimorés, and a dialogue with Companhia Vale do Rio Doce, the company responsible for the railway running though their land.
The Krenak were supported in their protest by eighty Indians from other tribes, including the Tupinikim and the Guarani.
