Solidarity for Brazilian Indians shot at and bombed

Peru’s national Amazon Indian organisation has expressed its support for Brazilian Indians who have been shot at, bombed, and had their land illegally occupied by powerful rice farmers.
‘We join the Indigenous people from Raposa Serra do Sol (in Brazil) in their fight and urge the Brazilian government to protect our brothers from the continuous attacks by rice farmers who enter their territories without respecting their rights,’ reads a statement from AIDESEP.
The government of Roraima, where Raposa Serra do Sol is located, has petitioned Brazil’s Supreme Court asking it to let the farmers remain on the Indians’ land. A ruling is expected in the first two weeks of August.
Two Brazilian Indians from the region have recently been in Europe raising awareness of their plight. They have met, among others, the Pope, British MPs, and staff of the vice-president of Spain.
